This work is a survey of pottery forms and surface techniques I’ve investigated over the last couple of years, while a resident member of the Clay Compound. Located in the Cully neighborhood of NE Portland, the Clay Compound was established as a collaborative and communal studio resource for ceramic artists to facilitate their professional activities in the ceramic arts. The “Compound” has been a valuable studio haven, not only for the particular equipment and facility that we need for our work, but also for the conceptual and communal relationships developed working with and around my fellow residents.
The pots in this show are representative of the stoneware clay and associative palette that I have fired in electric kilns and porcelains that have been sodium-glazed in our small, gas “Soda Pops” kiln. I have also been involved with a number wood kiln firings in Oregon and Washington over the last few years, most notably the FuuKooGama kiln in Sheridan, OR and the anagama kiln at Pleasant Hill Pottery. I have included here some favorite pieces from each of those two kilns last year.
